Artist's Bio
Augustine Wright, commonly known to his friends as “August” was born in 1971 in Los Angeles, California. Although American, he spent about 14 years in Japan, where he graduated from Kanazawa University and became bi-lingual in Japanese. During his time abroad he traveled to just about every country in Asia and the south Pacific Rim including Australia, New Zealand, and the Fiji Islands. He also has a passion for Europe and especially enjoyed his time spent in Italy. With so much travel under his belt, his artistic view reflects his experiences meeting and observing people from many backgrounds and cultures. Returning to the US in 2004, he spent two years in his hometown, and then moved to Frederick Maryland in 2006, where he is happy to call home because of the city’s history and charm.
He works mostly in acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media, but is always experimenting with new mediums. His style uses bright vivid colors as well as dark contrasts in a posterized theme. He enjoys working with landscapes, portraits, conceptual art, illustrations and abstracts, and he continues growing, learning, and maturing his style along with his craft.
Artist's Statement
My most recent pieces reflect my interest in Asian symmetry and direct expression. Of special interest is the use of color over multiple surfaces, the experiences of mark and pattern making, of fusing marks with content, and of having the unexpected happening. I consider my artwork to be an experimental language. The constructions are usually two-dimensional wall pieces created from photographs, prints, and well…from my mind. My pieces are mostly done on, canvas board, canvas paper, traditional stretched canvas, and masonite.
My favorite artist is my Father Robert A. Wright (in my opinion, our modern day Michelangelo) but of course I enjoy the greats like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Buonarroti, Van Gogh, Monet, Seurat, Gauguin, Renoir, Rodin, Takashi Murakami, Frazetta, Syd Mead, Matt Busch, Dennis Lewis and many others. I also have a local artist, Amy Connor, that inspires and encourages me. I love the feel of being closer to, and becoming part of what I create. I even find myself using my fingers while painting with acrylics on canvas some days. I hope not to lose that connection with my art, even if I spend a lifetime doing this, I want it to always express who I really am.
I am an artist inspired by loved ones and friends, and that is what makes me feel the most alive.
Lastly, I must mention that my art stems from the one dearest to my heart, my muse Dara, for finding and releasing my gem from within. I’d also like to thank her for the countless hours of posing for many of my pieces with so much patience J
